The Semillero

On September 16 of 2005, our project opened its doors to the underprivileged children of our community.  For the founder and director Marta Elena Álvarez Azurdía, the dream of providing educational support to these children and an alternative to the life in the street in order to avoid social problems such as alcoholism, drug addiction, delinquency and “maras” (criminalized street gangs) became reality.

Due to the lack of decent work in our country and the obligation to provide for their family, single mothers have to find income sources and end up performing underpaid cleaning jobs, abandoning their children alone at home and not being able to give them the attention they need.

At the opening, 17 children registered and were under the responsibility of 2 Guatemalan adults. Today, we work with 45 children and 4 Guatemalan volunteers.  In addition, more than 200 international volunteers have collaborated with us in the last 3 years.

Thanks to the loan of two houses for a 5 year period, we welcome the children from 2 o’clock to 6 o’clock in the afternoon and offer them help with homework and school subjects.  They can also participate in various activities.

The Mission

The mission of the Semillero Mi Ángel Guardián is primarily educational: to offer the Santa Ana and the neighbourhood children help with homework as well as workshops destined to encourage their artistic, social and sportive abilities while assuring their integral development and the one of their family.
